Swap a day

  • Day trip to Vientiane, Laos: an international bus from Udon takes about 2–3 hours with the border.

Udon Thani itinerary FAQ

How many days do you need in Udon Thani?

Three days covers the Expo and the city, the Red Lotus Sea with Ban Chiang, and a day on the Mekong. Add a fourth day for Vientiane in Laos or a night in Nong Khai.

Can I see the Expo and the Red Lotus Sea on the same day?

It is possible but rushed: the lotus is best from 06:00 to 10:00 and the lake is about 49 min from the city, and the Expo needs about 4 hours. Splitting them over two days is much more relaxed.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

Day 1 works with Grab and taxis. For days 2 and 3 a car, a driver or a tour is much easier, because there is little public transport to these places.

What is the best time of year for this trip?

Mid-December to February: the Red Lotus Sea is in bloom, the weather is cool and dry, and the Expo is open (1 Nov 2026 – 14 Mar 2027).
